ViewExport vs Slack Native Export

Overall: Slack’s native export is included with your plan and is fine for a backup. It is not a review tool. ViewExport ingests the exact same export and turns it into something a legal, IT, or HR team can actually use.

What native export is, and isn't

A ZIP of JSON is not a review workflow

Slack's export is well-engineered for what it is: a structured dump of your workspace data. It's just not designed for the question 'find every message Jane sent in March about Project X and redact the PII before producing to counsel.'

FeatureViewExportSlack Native
Output FormatSearchable, filterable workspace with redaction and defensible PDF/CSV exportsZIP file of raw JSON, one folder per channel
Full-Text Search✅ Search across channels, DMs, and date ranges in one query❌ Not provided in the export itself — you build your own
Date Range Filtering✅ Native date-range filters in the review UIAwkward in Slack's UI; not present in the export output
Private Channel & DM Coverage✅ Full coverage of whatever your export includes, with no Slack alertsDepends on Slack plan; admin access to private channels in Slack triggers join alerts
Redaction✅ Redact PII or privileged content before producing to outside parties❌ You'd be hand-editing JSON
Audit Trail✅ Immutable log of every search, view, and export❌ No record of who read what after the export was generated
DSAR WorkflowPull every message from one user across every channel in one operationPossible, but manual — you grep JSON or hire an engineer
CostCloud from $499/mo; enterprise from $6k/yr; desktop annual license availableFree — included in your Slack plan
When native export is fine

Honest take: you may not need anything else

If your real need is a backup, or you have an engineer to grep through JSON, native export is genuinely enough. We're not going to tell you otherwise.

One-off backup

You want a copy of the workspace on a shelf in case Slack disappears or your contract lapses. Run the export, save the ZIP, done. Native does this well.

You have engineers for the rest

If your team is technical and you’re writing scripts against the JSON for migration or analytics, you don’t need a UI. Native export plus your tooling is a reasonable stack.

No review obligation right now

No active legal hold, no DSAR, no HR matter, no audit. Just an export sitting in a vault. There’s no review workflow to support, so there’s nothing to add yet.
When native export breaks down

The moment someone has to find a specific message, you have a problem

Every customer we have started with native export and hit one of these walls. Usually it was a single Friday afternoon legal request that forced the upgrade.

You can't filter Slack by date range natively

Filtering messages by a specific date range in Slack’s own UI is painful, and the export gives you JSON files split by day with no built-in viewer. ViewExport makes date-range filtering a single control.

Joining private channels alerts users

In native Slack, an admin joining a private channel posts a “has joined” message. That’s a tell during HR investigations or sensitive matters. ViewExport reads from the export — no joining, no alerts.

Raw JSON is unreadable to reviewers

Attorneys, paralegals, compliance officers, and HR partners cannot review JSON files. Either you build them a viewer, or you spend hours of IT time converting on every request, or you use a tool built for the job.

There's no audit trail of who searched what

Once the export hits a shared drive, you lose visibility into who opened it, what they searched for, and what they exported. For defensible review, that’s a chain-of-custody gap.

DSARs are slow and manual

Under GDPR, you have a clock to produce all messages from a single user. With native, that’s a manual grep across every JSON file. With ViewExport, it’s one filtered query and an export.

No redaction before production

Producing Slack data to outside counsel or a regulator often requires redacting PII or privileged content. There’s no way to redact a JSON file in Slack; you’d be hand-editing structured data.
How ViewExport works with native export

We don't replace Slack's export. We make it usable.

ViewExport ingests the exact ZIP file Slack produces. Nothing about your data acquisition changes — only what happens after.

Same export, different destination

Run Slack’s native export the way you already do. Drop the ZIP into ViewExport. You now have a searchable, filterable, auditable workspace ready for review.

Cloud or desktop, your choice

Use the hosted cloud edition for team review, or the Mac and Windows desktop edition if the data can’t leave your machine. Desktop ships an annual license with included updates, and the app keeps running after renewal.

Works with Discovery API output too

On Enterprise Grid? ViewExport also ingests Slack Discovery API output, so you can pull data continuously and review the same way.

Glad for ViewExport - in Slack you can't filter easily by date range, which is annoying and not usable for Legal/eDiscovery. And Onna is way too expensive. You guys are perfect.

This is marvelous. I'm the Slack admin of my company and I'm tired of searching through the json files for messages for HR investigations. Now I can share relevant exports with legal in a few clicks.

ViewExport is a modern, cloud and desktop platform for searching and governing corporate Slack messages to maintain compliance. Think of us as a single-purpose tool — an alternative to Onna, Mimecast Aware, Hanzo, Smarsh, and Pagefreezer. Technical teams can also compare us to Slackdump or Backupery, or read why teams outgrow Slack's native export for legal review. Message Crawler customers will also enjoy switching to ViewExport so that they can filter and search their Slack archives before uploading them to Relativity, saving a reported $10-50k per year on RelOne data and hosting costs, according to some of our customers. You can read more here about the top Slack eDiscovery tools available.
The free trial is 7 days with a nominal data usage limit to prevent abuse.
