ViewExport vs Slackdump

Overall: Slackdump is an open-source CLI that pulls a Slack workspace into raw JSON. ViewExport is what legal, IT, and HR teams use to actually search, redact, and export that data — without anyone having to run a Go binary.

ViewExport vs Slackdump Overview

Slackdump gets you the data. ViewExport makes it usable.

Slackdump is genuinely good at one thing: turning a Slack workspace into JSON files you control. Everything that happens after that — searching, filtering, redacting, producing for outside counsel — is on you.

The main question

Are your reviewers engineers, or are they not?

That single question tells you which tool you need. Slackdump assumes its user can read JSON and write a script. ViewExport assumes they cannot — and shouldn't have to.

Built for non-technical reviewers

Attorneys, compliance officers, HR partners, and IT admins shouldn’t be running CLI tools or parsing JSON to answer a legal hold or a DSAR. ViewExport gives them a real interface for the actual task.

Search and redact, not just download

Filter by date range, user, channel, or keyword. Redact PII before handing data to outside counsel. Produce defensible PDF or CSV bundles with attached metadata. Slackdump stops at the JSON file.

Audit logging out of the box

Every search, view, and export in ViewExport is logged immutably. For HR investigations or regulator inquiries, that chain of custody is the difference between “we looked into it” and “here is the record of every action our reviewers took.”
When to pick Slackdump

Honest take: Slackdump is the right call for these cases

If you're a technical user with a specific job to do and no review workflow to support, Slackdump is genuinely a great option. We're not trying to talk you out of it.

You're an engineer doing a one-time pull

You need the data on disk, you’ll write a Python script to extract what you need, and you’ll never look at this workspace again. Slackdump is faster than spinning up a SaaS account.

You're piping into your own tooling

You’ve already built ingest into Elasticsearch, Relativity, or a home-grown review platform. You don’t need a UI — you need clean JSON in a known format. Slackdump delivers that.

Budget is genuinely zero

Slackdump is free. If you have a strict no-spend constraint and you also have the engineering time to support reviewers manually, it’s a defensible choice.
When to pick ViewExport

If a non-engineer ever has to use the output, switch

The minute a paralegal, compliance officer, or HR partner has to look at the data, the math changes. Their hourly rate is higher than our license — and they cannot review raw JSON.

Same data, but reviewable

ViewExport ingests the same Slack export format Slackdump produces. If you already have JSON exports sitting on disk, you can upload them today and have searchable, filterable, redactable data in minutes.

Desktop edition if data must stay local

Worried about uploading sensitive Slack data to a SaaS? ViewExport has a Mac and Windows desktop edition. Annual license, runs forever, your data never touches our servers. Same security posture as Slackdump, with a real review UI on top.

No Go binaries in your audit trail

Security teams don’t love handing CLI tools to non-engineers, and they really don’t love them in regulated environments. ViewExport is a vetted SaaS or signed desktop application — easier to defend in an audit.
The combined workflow

A lot of teams use both

There's no rule that says you have to pick one. Plenty of customers use Slackdump to pull data — especially from workspaces where they don't have admin access to run an official export — and then load the output into ViewExport for review.

Slackdump for acquisition

Use the CLI when you need flexibility in how the data comes out, when you’re grabbing a private channel you have user-level access to, or when official export isn’t available.

ViewExport for review

Hand the resulting JSON to ViewExport. Your reviewers get a real interface, your audit trail is intact, and your defensible production is a few clicks away.

Best of both worlds

Free, flexible data extraction plus a paid, supported review layer. That’s a stack most legal-ops teams can live with.

Glad for ViewExport - in Slack you can't filter easily by date range, which is annoying and not usable for Legal/eDiscovery. And Onna is way too expensive. You guys are perfect.

This is marvelous. I'm the Slack admin of my company and I'm tired of searching through the json files for messages for HR investigations. Now I can share relevant exports with legal in a few clicks.

ViewExport is a modern, cloud and desktop platform for searching and governing corporate Slack messages to maintain compliance. Think of us as a single-purpose tool — an alternative to Onna, Mimecast Aware, Hanzo, Smarsh, and Pagefreezer. Technical teams can also compare us to Slackdump or Backupery, or read why teams outgrow Slack's native export for legal review. Message Crawler customers will also enjoy switching to ViewExport so that they can filter and search their Slack archives before uploading them to Relativity, saving a reported $10-50k per year on RelOne data and hosting costs, according to some of our customers. You can read more here about the top Slack eDiscovery tools available.
The free trial is 7 days with a nominal data usage limit to prevent abuse.
